The Folsom Ranch Sports & Entertainment Complex

Frequently
Asked Questions

What is the Folsom Ranch Sports and Entertainment Complex (The Complex)?

The Folsom Ranch Sports and Entertainment Complex is a new state-of-the-art, multi-sport recreational and entertainment facility in Folsom Ranch, featuring both indoor and outdoor spaces. It will host a variety of sports and events, including ice hockey, figure skating, lacrosse, rugby, and live music. The Complex is designed to accommodate athletes and spectators of all ages and abilities.

What facilities will be available at the Complex?

The Complex will feature three NHL-sized ice rinks, including a 3,000-seat arena, a 126,000 sq. ft. covered and lit turf field, locker rooms, a restaurant, a pro shop, meeting spaces, and more. There will also be ample parking for visitors.

What kind of sports and activities will the Complex offer?

The Complex will support a wide range of activities, including ice hockey, figure skating, curling, lacrosse, soccer, rugby, baseball, softball, football, and adaptive sports. Public skating and training sessions will also be available, along with a wide array of entertainment options.

How will this project impact the local economy?

The Folsom Ranch Sports and Entertainment Complex is expected to generate over $23.7 million annually in new spending for the City of Folsom from retail, lodging, food and beverage, and entertainment sales. The Complex will create approximately 470 full-time jobs. At capacity, the Complex will serve more than 1.3 million visitors per year.

Who is leading the project?

The Mettle Shop is the team developing sports and entertainment spaces where communities gather, play, and grow. They’re industry experts with over 100 years of combined experience in sports, entertainment, and recreation. Team members have been involved in developing well-known venues like Raley Field (now Sutter Health Park), the Sacramento Republic FC, Heart Health Park, and Golden 1 Center.

How can I stay informed about the Complex’s progress?

You can sign up for email updates on our website to receive the latest news and announcements about the facility.

What makes this Complex unique?

The Complex’s focus on health and safety is paramount, with air-quality-controlled environments and a covered turf field to ensure safe play during extreme weather conditions. It’s also the first of its kind in the region, providing space for both youth and adult sports, tournaments, and community events.

How is the project funded?

There will be significant private investment in the Folsom Ranch Sports and Entertainment Complex. In addition, the Mettle Shop is working with the City of Folsom to develop a public-private partnership that will not impact the City of Folsom’s budget, except for the addition of new revenue, as noted above. The proposal with the City is still being finalized and will ultimately be discussed at public meetings.

Can the region support this many sheets of ice?

Sacramento County is the largest county in the U.S. without a dedicated NHL-sized hockey rink within a 30-minute drive for most residents. Currently, the only two year-round ice sheets are in Roseville and have been oversubscribed for years. The Folsom Ranch Sports and Entertainment Complex will serve 530,000 people within a 10-mile radius and over 2 million within a 25-mile radius.

Will there be an impact on Highway 50 or local traffic?

Construction of the project will occur in the Folsom Ranch area off Highway 50 Exit 25 Prairie City Road. A full traffic study will be completed as part of the City’s review process, and any traffic impacts will be mitigated. Special events that occur at the Folsom Ranch Sports Complex will provide for special event parking, as is done with other City programs.

Has the City of Folsom already approved the Folsom Ranch Sports Project?

No. The Mettle Shop has not yet filed a formal application with the City and anticipates doing so in the first quarter of 2025. After the application is filed, the City will determine the environmental review that is necessary and will process the project application as it does other applications for development in the City. The project will require public hearings at both the Planning Commission and City Council, which are not expected to occur until late 2025 at the earliest. There will be public notices for such hearings.
